Many early settlers to The Halfway locality were from the first immigration ships, which sailed into Petone between 1840 and 1855.
At least 25 rural heritage sites from this era have been catalogued by the Glenside Progressive Assn. Inc. Most of the sites have buildings, fences or abandoned gardens associated with them. Water determined where homes were built and stock grazed. For example, there used to be trough carved out of stone on Middleton Road to water drovers stock. The trough has gone however the stream that filled it still flows.
