Under the bridge

Jone Sumasafu, Civil/structures Project Engineer for Wellington City Council, explains the works being undertaken at the bridge on the intersection of Middleton Road and Rowell’s Road.

"The existing bridge structure (ID – RB118) located on Middleton Road, Glenside is estimated to have been constructed circa 1950 and following a condition assessment by OPUS International Consultants Ltd, the concrete repairs currently being undertaken is to assist the bridge structure in extending its full design life, estimated to be a minimum of 20 years away (2040)."

"This more cost effective option was preferred by Wellington City Council (WCC) over the other option to replace the entire structure."

"The concrete repair work currently being undertaken by BBR Contech is part of WCC’s programme to strengthen and/or replace the infrastructures on priority routes to ensure these roads are safe for vehicle usage during an event."

"The scope of work includes repairs to the existing box culvert soffit, i.e. breakout of spalling areas, replace corroded reinforcement and its reinstatement and the construction of the culvert aprons (bases)."

"The work is currently programmed to be completed by the end of April 2018, weather and/or stream flow levels pending."

"Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any further queries."
